In my opinion, K3b (www.k3b.org) is the best CD-Writing application for linux. It's very easy to use and supports the common features (and even more) you would expect from a burning app. Check the K3b home page for more information.

If you have questions related to the packages below, mail me otherwise check the k3b-user mailing list.

RPM packages for K3b v0.10.99 - CVS version

Do not expect a fully working K3b version as this is work in progress. Use the CVS version only if you want to test the new features of K3b before the next stable release.

( Please check http://fenrir.infoiasi.ro/~xcyborg/k3b/cvs/ , too because newer packages might be available. )

k3b-0.10.99-CVS.20031016.xcyb.3.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 16 October 2003

k3b-0.10-CVS.20031006.xcyb.3.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 6 October 2003

k3b-0.10.1-CVS.20030925.xcyb.3.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 25 September 2003

k3b-0.10-CVS.20030821.xcyb.3.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 21 August 2003

Note: This package contains a patch that corrects a bug that appears when trying to compile K3b for any other cpu than i386. Sebastian was informed about this problem and hopely will fix it soon. If K3b crashes at startup please send me an email with details.

k3b-0.10-CVS.20030819.xcyb.3.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 19 August 2003

Note: This package contains a patch that corrects a bug that appears when trying to compile K3b for any other cpu than i386. Sebastian was informed about this problem and hopely will fix it soon.

k3b-0.10-CVS.20030801.xcyb.2.rh9.src.rpm - Snapshot from 1 August 2003

Note: If you get an error when rebuilding this package then I suggest you to rebuild the package by issuing:
rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i686 --define "__global_cflags -pipe -O3" k3b-0.10-CVS.20030801.xcyb.2.rh9.src.rpm
Of course you may change the target, but the idea is to compile the package using the -O3 optimization flag.

yum/apt rpm repository

All of these rpms are also available via two yum & apt repositories so I recommend you to use them instead of direct downloading the packages. To learn how to configure your system to use yum or apt for easy updating and resolving dependencies please check: Yum home page, Yum HOWTO, Apt home page, Apt HOWTO.

K3b CVS "snapshooter"

K3b CVS "snapshooter" is a shell script that downloads the current version of K3b from CVS and creates a package. As output format it supports tar.gz, tar.bz2 and src.rpm thus making the deployment process very easy. It can be used by both newcomers and experienced users for making K3b snapshots and test the development version.

Tiny-HowTo:
- create a directory that will hold the script and the entire K3b directory structure ( mkdir ~/k3b-CVS )
- download the script into the above directory ( wget http://fenrir.infoiasi.ro/~xcyborg/k3b/cvs/k3b-cvs.sh -P ~/k3b-CVS )
- set the execute flag for the file ( chmod +x ~/k3b-CVS/k3b-cvs.sh )
- change to that directory and execute the shell script ( cd ~/k3b-CVS && ./k3b-cvs.sh ) . When executed first time the script will create another directory called k3b-CVS that will hold the actual CVS tree
- a file named .k3b-vvv.CVS.dddddddd.tar.bz2 file will be created in the current directory where vvv = version and dddddddd = the current date
- unpack the archive and just issue the normal ./configure , make and make install comands

Parameters:
-c the equivalent of a 'make clean' command
-d workdir the 'workdir' directory is used as working directory instead of current directory
-h|--help this help screen
-i compiles and installs the latest version of K3b on your system ( the equivallent of './configure && make && make install' )
-j select 'tar.bz2' output format ( default option )
-m compiles the K3b snapshot ( the equivallent of './configure && make' )
-p patchfile apply 'patchfile' to the sources. The patch is applied in the top level directory with the '-p1' paramater ( see 'man patch' for more info )
-s select 'src.rpm' output format
-o outputdir write the output file into the specified directory
-v verbose
-z select 'tar.gz' output format

Other packages you may want to use

You might want to install the following packages if you want to be on the bleeding edge with cdrecording or want to try out new features provided by K3b. They are not released as stable versions so there is no guarantee that they'll work as you expect. Install them only if you know what are you are doing and fully understand the consequences. I use them frequently and didn't find any problems, but, who knows, you might find some.

Red Hat 9 RPM packages for cdrtools 2.01-alpha19

This package is needed in order to test the "cloning" feature in the CVS version. The resulting binary packages will allready have cdrecord & readcd with the suid attribute set and the owner root:cdrecording thus eliminating the need for running K3bsetup again.

cdrecord-2.01-a19.xcyb.1.rh9.i386.rpm
cdrecord-2.01-a19.xcyb.1.rh9.i686.rpm

mkisofs-2.01-a19.xcyb.1.rh9.i686.rpm
mkisofs-2.01-a19.xcyb.1.rh9.athlon.rpm
cdda2wav-2.01-a19.xcyb.1.rh9.i386.rpm

Red Hat 9 RPM packages for cdrdao 1.1.8-pre2

The work on cdrdao, unfortunately, stopped almost a year ago. The thing that got updated though, is the internal libscg that now provides support for ATAPI devices. Although this support is in an unfinished stage you might want to try it.
The resulting binary packages will allready have cdrdao with the suid attribute set and the owner root:cdrecording thus eliminating the need for running K3bsetup again.

cdrdao-1.1.8-pre2.xcyb.2.rh9.i386.rpm
cdrdao-1.1.8-pre2.xcyb.2.rh9.i686.rpm
cdrdao-1.1.8-pre2.xcyb.2.rh9.athlon.rpm
cdrdao-1.1.8-pre2.xcyb.2.rh9.src.rpm

Older packages

If you are looking for older packages of K3b for Fedora Core or Red Hat go to http://rpms.xcyb.org and browse the /fedora/ and/or /redhat/ directories. You will find there all K3b versions >= v0.9.
